Have sustainable non-niffy-pits with a T'eo
It’s Wednesday and time again for my weekly radio show, ‘Slow Down and Green Up’.
Between 10am-1pm today I’ll be skillfully lacing together a 3-hour extention of The Book of Rubbish Ideas, packed full of great music and chat showing you how to live more sustainbly!
Today I’ll also be talking to a very nice lady from Lush about alternatives to those spray can and ball type deoderants – both of which seem to be empty in a heartbeat and one of which you can’t even recycle.
I’ll also give you my own personal review of a few of their anti-armpit pong products too.
As if that’s not enough, I’ll be giving you a snippet from two great movies to hit the Odeon cinema this week, The Spirit and The Reader and I’ll have 3 goodie bags with free cinema tickets for you to go see a great flick at an Odeon near you.
So whatever you’re doing this morning, do it with me in your ear, by clicking here.
Rubbishly yours,
TS x

Hi there. Thanks for including Fake Plastic Fish in your blogroll. This is a wonderful site.
Just want to chime in with my solution to the deodorant problem… plain sodium bicarbonate. Yes, it works. And is super inexpensive. I keep it in a tea tin in my underwear drawer and apply to dry underarms with a fluffy powder puff. Zero waste because I can buy baking soda (our word for it here in the states) from a bulk bin using my own container.
For those who desire some scent, add a few drops of your essential oil of choice. When I first started using baking soda as deodorant, I added tea tree oil for added bacteria-fighting insurance. But these days, I use it plain, and it works just as well.
What a good idea about the bicarb. I might just give that a go and see… on the subject of Lush, I think that I am not a fan because of their use of SLS and other stuff that my hair and skin won’t tolerate and their shops are just a bit smelly. However, they have a good high street presence these days, they think about stuff, they are open about the stuff they use and they are passionate about a lot of good causes. Therefore, I think, for some they are a good 1st step on the road to a greener way of life and way of thinking. There is no testing on animals and their solid deods have been around for years, way before the likes of pitrok and the like. They also make looking at all things ethical fun and luxurious and young and vibrant. This can only be a good thing. I remember when I used to buy Urtekram (sp!!??) shampoo in a nasty looking plastic bottle that I had to dust off at the back of the local health food shop in Brighton before buying and that dried my hair to a frazzle, but it was the only way, apart from the body shop (yes we were a lucky lot in Brighton at the time really, but don’t get me started on TBS now!!!) to ensure that I was using something that had not been tested on animals. If only they would cut out the SLS from everything. Their Sls shampoo bar is veeery good though!!
Hi, fantastic listening to you today, what a fab programme, great fun and i was lucky enough to win cinema tickets! great! I will definetly be listening again, you kept me company while I surfed the net and got on with some work! Interesting information too – organic holidays site looks good and not too expensive. Thank you! However I do find Lush shops overwelmingly smelly!!
Yes, I tuned in too – you’ve got a way with words girl! Better than my usual stint on Radio 2.
I’ll be back for more next Wednesday. Will you be giving away more odean tickets? I missed that bit – was stuck on the phone….grrr..

I definatly have to try out the lush armpitsmellstoppers! That’ll be a nice present I offer myself at the end of this extremely frugal month!!
A good idea – let me know how you get on with it! I love it and it’s lasting aaaaages…! I’m doing natural face masks with them next Wednesday and I’ll be posing all those awkward questions about SLS and those overpowering smells!
Rubbishly yours,

Better than Radio 2 eh! Wow, what a compliment (I’m printing it off to frame it right now!)…
I’m back on tomorrow with another packed show, 10 – 1 http://www.AppleAM.com and click ‘Listen Live’.
Give me a tinkle in the studio and I’ll play you a tune,
Rubbishly yours,

Hi Sophie – they are a bit overwhelmingly fragrant at times, I agree. Actually, you must remember to tune in next week, I’ll have the manager in and we’ll be talking natural face masks.
Also, I must report, every bit of packaging from Lush is recyclable. Of course paper and card are dead easy to recycle at home, but anything plastic or metal can be taken into the store and deposited there for responsible recycling. They even do a loyalty scheme thing. After you’ve brought in so many pots (cannot remember the number now though), they give you a nice freebie!

Hi Indiebird,
Always a pleasure hearing from you!
Great points there missus and I agree with you entirely! The SLS is, in my opinion, unnecessary too and I’m looking forward to speaking to the manager of the shop to put my/your points forward. She’s due in next Wednesday (not tomorrow), please call in if you can and chat direct!
Rubbishly yours,

Hi Beth,
Thanks for your reply and for popping over to take a look at my ‘rubbish’!
Sodium bicarbonate is a great solution to many things, you’re right there.
It’s interesting, there’s definitely a movement in the UK that’s gaining pace, of people who want to use natural options for their personal hygiene and household cleaning routines. Once their eyes are opened to the troubles that lie in the toxic ingredients of those lurid, plastic squirty guns, there’s no gong back. I must say, one of my favourite guidebooks is Natural Stain Remover.
